Love being creative and helping people live the lives they choose?

At The Stable Family Home Trust, we’ve supported adults with learning disabilities since 1980 and now support over 100 people every year. We help people build the skills and confidence to live as independently as possible, take part in their local communities and be valued for the contribution they make. We’re looking for a creative, caring Activity Support Worker to join our day services team at The Bradbury Centre.

If you have experience of supporting people with learning disabilities and a flair for creative activities, we’d love to hear from you.

About the role

Working with our Assistant Day Services Manager, you’ll plan and deliver activities shaped by each person’s own goals and ambitions, helping the people we support to learn new skills, grow in independence and see the progress they are making.

What you’ll be doing

  • Planning and running activities with each person we support, shaped around their own goals for independent living, learning, work and community life
  • Communicating in the way that works best for each person – so they can make informed choices and have their views heard
  • Supporting people to do things for themselves, rather than doing things for them
  • Building trusting relationships with the people we support, their families and carers, colleagues and partners
  • Taking a positive approach to risk – keeping people safe while enabling them to try new things
  • Recording each person’s participation and progress on our case management system, Nourish, so their support keeps improving
  • Challenging stigma and promoting a positive image of the people we support in the wider community

What you’ll bring

  • Experience of working with people with learning disabilities, including people with limited verbal communication
  • Experience of planning creative activities that help people learn new skills and achieve their goals
  • A calm, sensible approach to supporting groups with diverse needs, including behaviours that can appear challenging
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, risk management and health and safety
  • Confidence using email and Microsoft Office
  • A reliable, proactive approach and the ability to work on your own when needed

It would be great if you also have a teaching or social care qualification. This is a full-time, on-site role at The Bradbury Centre, with no night work or split shifts.

What we offer

  • An hourly rate of £13 (£27,040 per year) for 40 hours per week
  • 33 days annual leave entitlement
  • Pension
  • Other benefits – wellbeing support, employee assistance programme, Blue Light Card
  • Supervision and ongoing training to support your development
  • The chance to join a values-led organisation guided by Choice, Collaboration, Respect, Safety and Trust

Good to know

  • This role requires an Enhanced DBS check with Barred List check. Having a conviction will not necessarily stop you from being appointed.
  • We’re committed to diversity in our team and particularly welcome applications from disabled people and from people of different ethnic, socio-economic and educational backgrounds.

Only UK-based candidates with the right to work in the UK can apply as we are unable to provide visa sponsorship.

No two shifts the same? You’ll love this.

Some people work best when they know exactly where they’ll be each day. Others come alive when the day throws something new at them. If you’re the second kind of person and you already have experience in care, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re looking for two Peripatetic Support Workers to join our Supported Living team at The Stable Family Home Trust. Rather than being based in one house, you’ll move between our supported living homes wherever you’re needed most. Sometimes that means picking up a shift at short notice. Sometimes it means walking into a home you haven’t worked in for a while and getting up to speed fast. Either way, you’ll be the person who keeps support steady for the people who rely on us.

What the job is really about

The people we support are adults with learning disabilities who want to live as independently as they can. Your job is to help them do that. One shift you might be cooking alongside someone who is learning to make meals for themselves or helping them get out into their local community. The next you might be going with someone to a GP appointment or helping them plan their weekly budget.

You’ll also give medication and keep clear, accurate records. Good handovers matter a lot in this role, because the next person on shift needs to know exactly what’s been happening.

Why care experience matters here

Because you’ll be moving between homes, you won’t always have time to ease in gently. That’s why we need people who have already worked in supported living or residential care. You’ll know what good, person-centred support looks like. You’ll be confident reading a support plan and risk assessment quickly and getting on with the shift.

You’ll also be able to stay calm when things get difficult. That includes responding to behaviour that challenges with minimal support, sometimes while working on your own.

Flexibility is at the heart of this role

Our rota runs seven days a week and includes sleep-ins, so you’ll need to be available across all days and hours. We want to be honest about that from the start. While we need you to be able to step in when we need you, we’ll also work with you to fit around any specific working pattern needs you may have. This role suits people who enjoy variety and can adapt easily to new teams and routines. If you get a buzz from being the one who steps in when it counts, you’ll fit right in.

What you’ll bring

• Experience working in supported living or residential care
• Experience supporting adults with learning disabilities, including joining in activities in the community
• Experience managing and giving medication
• Confidence handling behaviour that challenges with minimal support
• A good understanding of adult safeguarding and CQC standards
• Experience using case management systems to record notes and outcomes
• The Care Certificate (Level 2) as a minimum and a willingness to keep learning. Level 3 would be a bonus.

About us

The Stable Family Home Trust was set up in 1980 by families whose young adult children had learning disabilities. Today we’re a values-led charity supporting more than 100 people a year across Dorset. Everything we do is about helping people build the skills and confidence to live the lives they choose.

Good to know

This role needs an Enhanced DBS check with a barred list check. You must be based in the UK and have the right to work here, as we can’t offer visa sponsorship.

We especially welcome applications from people with disabilities and people of colour. We also want to hear from people of every social and educational background.

How to apply

Apply through Indeed with your CV and a short covering letter. If you’d like a chat first, email our HR team at recruitment@sfht.org.uk.

Have you ever considered becoming a Trustee in the charity sector?

We are looking for people to join our Board of Trustees to bring additional skills and experiences to enrich the support that we are able to provide to our staff team and our service users. People who are able to make a real and positive impact on the organisation’s long-term future.

We are an equal opportunities employer and value diversity, and would welcome applications from all sections of the community. We are particularly keen to recruit Trustees with a financial background, a housing background or a social care background.

Becoming a charity Trustee is a rewarding and fulfilling way to support causes that you have a connection with and helps you build new networks that can support your career, your confidence and your wellbeing.

About Us

The Stable Family Home Trust was established over four decades ago with the aim of providing a caring and therapeutic environment for adults with learning disabilities. The original focus was on horticulture and enabling our service users to learn how to grow plants and food crops and increase their skills and knowledge base in these areas.

Over the years the Trust has diversified and strengthened its offer and now supports over 50 people through our seven Supported Living Homes, with demand for housing increasing all the time, and up to 100 people through our Day Services provision. We use a person-centred approach, seeing the person and not the disability, and work with each of them individually to help them develop their skills and confidence so they can live fulfilling and productive lives. With personalised care and support plans tailored to individual strengths and needs, our service users are empowered to live their lives with greater independence and choice, and to better understand their rights as a member of the community.

As we embark on our fourth decade our focus remains on ensuring that the people we support have access to the highest quality housing and a wide range of opportunities to participate in opportunities that challenge them, develop and enhance their skills, and be recognised for the valuable contribution that they make to our community.

If you believe that every person should been seen and valued, this is the perfect opportunity for you to join an organisation that embraces creativity, proactive and collaborative approaches, and equity and diversity.

What is involved

As a Trustee, you are expected to prepare for and attend up to six Board meetings a year, including our AGM. You are also expected to be available to contribute advice and support on an ad hoc basis, as needed by the business, and participate in one of our two sub-committees – Property & Facilities; Audit, Finance and Risk.

There is no need to have previous experience as a Trustee to apply – your passion, enthusiasm and dedication is what we value most.

In return we will provide you with:

  • Induction, access to training, and the reimbursement of reasonable expenses
  • Opportunities to make strategic decisions and develop new skills
  • Opportunities to network with senior professionals
  • Influence to shape innovative projects
  • The chance to contribute to improving the lives and long-term outcomes for adults with learning disabilities
